2-Alarm fire on Walnut Street 08/11/2008 The Bridgeton Fire Department responded to 111/113 Walnut Street at 0211Hrs for a dwelling fire. Ladder 705 and Engine 701 arrived on location with Captain Shelton reporting a working fire. Recalled off-duty personnel responded with 7 Truck and Engine 702. Chief Schoch ordered a 2nd alarm at 0303Hrs bringing two more engine companies (Gouldtown and Hopewell-Stow Creek), a ladder (Cedarville) and a Rapid Intervention Team (Vineland Co. #6). Zion Way 07/27/2008 At 0141 Hrs Engine 701 and Ladder 705 were dispatched to Academy Street for the report of a dwelling fire. Upon arrival firefighters found a two story wood frame dwelling on the corner of Columbus and Mt. Zion Way with heavy fire on the second floor. Captain Shelton and Lt. Sims led crews into the second floor apartment for fire attack and primary search. Chief Schoch arrived and requested a "box" assignment, calling back off duty career staff. The fire was placed under control at 0231 Hrs. Busy first half of 2008 07/1/2008 The Bridgeton Fire Department has responded to 2,478 call for service so far this year. This includes 1863 medical calls, 144 motor vehicle accidents and other rescue situations, and 471 fire calls. For more information, click here. Two new firefighters sworn in by City 05/06/2008 With the hiring of Elvin Beardsworth and Michael Hitchner, the Fire Department now has twenty-two fulltime firefighters (Bridgeton News Article). A recent reorganization of the department has established each of the three shifts with a Captain, Lieutenant and four firefighters. The two new hires will be placed on shifts upon completion of training. In addition, thirteen fulltime and sixteen part time Emergency Medical Technicians ensure that two ambulances are staffed at all times. The department is managed by the Chief and a Battalion Chief. Department opens second station 04/21/2008 Due to traffic and congestion from the Route 49 bridge replacement project, the former rescue squad facility on Scholastic Drive has been reopened to house an Engine Company and one BLS ambulance. The Chief's office has also relocated to the new station. The location enables emergency responders rapid access to the western side of the city and Hopewell and Stow Creek Townships by not having to travel through traffic on the Broad Street and Commerce Street bridges. This station is staffed from 8am to 8pm seven days a week.
Former Ice Plant Burns 02/26/2008 At 0136 Hrs the alarm was transmitted for a structure fire at the former Crystal Ice plant on North Elm Street. "A" Platoon responded with Ladder 705 and Engine 701. "B" Platoon, which had been called in earlier to supplement staffing due to a power sub-station fire and the resulting wide scale power outage, responded 7 Truck and Rescue 721. Chief Schoch and A/Captain Bowen were also at the firehouse and responded. Upon arrival Chief Schoch reported fire showing from the vacant structure. A "Box" assignment was requested bringing back "C" Platoon with Engine 702. Mutual aid was requested from Gouldtown, Hopewell, Cedarville and Downe Township. Crews fought the blaze for over nine hours.
