I am starting a business in Bridgeton.  Do I need a fire inspection?

To comply with state and local codes, your business will most likely need an annual fire inspection.  For more information click here.

 

I am selling or buying a home.  I am told I need a Certificate of Smoke Detector/Carbon Monoxide Detector and Fire Extinguisher Compliance.

The Bureau of Fire Prevention can provide this certificate.  Fees range from $35.00 to $125.00.  Call for an appointment.   For more information click here.

 

Can I burn leaves or trash in my yard?

No person or persons shall make or cause to be made any open fire or bonfire of any kind or burn any type of combustible materials whatsoever in the City of Bridgeton except for cooking purposes or indoor fireplaces, incinerators or furnaces according to Chapter 107 of the City Code.

 

I had a small fire on my property or in my house but it is now extinguished.  Should I call the fire department?

Yes!  Many times a fire can appear out but my reignite minutes or even hours later.  Always call 911 as soon as possible if  you see or smell smoke or fire.  In addition, insurance companies often require a fire report from the fire department.

The Bridgeton Fire Department, as the local enforcing agency, is responsible for enforcement of the Uniform Fire Safety Act within the City of Bridgeton, New Jersey.  Inspections are performed annually for life hazard and non-life hazards uses.  Permits are issued by the Fire Official.  All businesses within the City of Bridgeton must register with the Fire Prevention Bureau.

 

Fire Safety Registration forms are available from the at the firehouse (1 Orange Street Bridgeton, New Jersey).  In addition, the New Jersey Division of Fire Safety has various forms available for download at their website: http://www.nj.gov/dca/dfs/formsapps.shtml

 

Chief Schoch serves as the appointed fire official and eleven firefighters are currently certified as inspectors.  Inspectors work 24-hour shifts and may not be available every weekday.  However, if you need to reach an inspector, you may leave a voice mail.  Additionally, the fire department secretary is available Monday - Friday 8:00 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. to assist in any fire inspection matters.

Reinspections for failed/no show inspections shall be the same fee schedule as initial inspection

Where to locate detectors

Smoke detectors are to be located on every level of a residence, (basement, first, second floor) excluding crawl spaces and unfinished attics, and in every separate sleeping area, between sleeping and living areas such as kitchen, garage, basement and utility room.  In homes with only one sleeping area on one floor, a detector is to be placed in the hallway outside the bedrooms.  In single floor homes with two separate sleeping areas, two detectors are required, outside each sleeping area.  In multi-level homes, detectors are to be located outside each sleeping area and at every finished level of the home.  Basement level detectors are to be located in close proximity to the bottom of basement stairwells.

Carbon monoxide detectors are to be located in every separate sleeping area.

 

Fire Extinguisher Requirements

Effective November 1, 2005, all one and two family dwellings must have a fire extinguisher at change of occupancy according to P.L.1991, c.92 (C.52:27D-198.1).  The requirements for the type and placement of the extinguisher are as follows:

1)

At least one fire extinguisher shall be installed in all one- and two- family dwellings (except seasonal rental units) upon change of occupancy

 

2)

The extinguisher shall be listed, labeled, charged, and operable

 

3)

The size shall be no smaller is size than 2A:10B:C, rated for residential use and weigh no more than 10lbs.

 

4)

The hangers or bracket's supplied by the manufacturer must be used

 

5)

The extinguisher must be located within 10 feet of the kitchen

 

6)

The top of the extinguisher must no be more than 5 feet above the floor

 

7)

The extinguisher must be visible and in a readily accessible location, free from being blocked by furniture, storage, or other items

 

8)

The extinguisher must be near a room exit or travel path that provides an escape route to the exterior

 

9)

The extinguisher must be accompanied by an owner's manual or written information regarding the operation, inspection, and maintenance of the extinguisher

 

10)

The extinguisher must be installed with the operating instructions clearly visible
