Fire Prevention Education
The Bridgeton Fire Department maintains a
long standing public education program. This program has
been educating the citizens of Bridgeton for more than 20 years.
The most visible portion of this program is the shows that are
performed each year during fire prevention week for the children
of area schools. Credit must be given to retired career
firefighter Robert Wastell, known as "Fireman Bob" by local
children and retired firefighter Lenny Wuzzardo ("Freddy
Firebuster"), for having the vision and perseverance to start
this program and keep it going for so long. Firefighter
Wastell, who retired in 2004, has "passed the torch" to other
members of the department who have worked with him in the
program, some of which are running the program today. This
program involves a 30-45 minute stage show highlighting some of
the dangers of fire in the home and workplace. The
characters in these shows are all dedicated firefighters from
within the department who devote endless hours of time during
October of each year. This program has expanded through
the years to now include schools in several surrounding
communities, as well as the children of our schools here in the
city.
In addition to the fire prevention week shows,
personnel are available throughout the year when requested to
provide demonstrations, fire prevention talks, firehouse tours
and fire extinguisher training. Anyone with questions, or
in need of scheduling an event etc. should contact Lt. Bowen at
(856)451-0091, Ext. 37.
